Craters of the Moons plants. Dwarf buckwheat (Eriogonum ovalifolium) growing on cinder cones at the Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve, Idaho, USA. The roots of these plants can extend nearly a metre below the surface. This protected area consists of lava fields (flood basalt areas), volcanic cones, and sagebrush steppe grasslands. Located in Idaho, USA, the Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve was established as a National Monument in 1924, and as a National Preserve in 2002.
