Flint water filter demonstration. Environmental Protection Agency employee at a public 'open house' event explaining how to install a water filter in Flint, Michigan, USA. A drinking water crisis in Flint started in April 2014 when the water supply became contaminated with lead that was leached from old water pipes after the supply was switched to more corrosive water from the Flint River. Elevated levels of lead in the blood caused health problems in thousands of children. A public health state of emergency was declared and the original water supply restored. Bottled or filtered water is being used until the water pipes are rebuilt. Photographed on 12 March 2016.
