Endometriotic cyst. Laparoscopic image of an endometriotic cyst (endometrioma, brown, upper centre) affecting the left ovary (white) of a 30-year-old female patient. Endometriomas are caused by endometriosis - a condition in which cells from the lining of the uterus (endometrium) appear and flourish outside the uterine cavity. They occur when a patch of endometrial tissue breaks off and moves to another area of the body, where it grows and enlarges over time.
