Brain cancer. Coloured T1-weighted magnetic resonance imaging scan (MRI) of an axial section through the brain of a 52-year-old male patient, showing a glioblastoma (round, upper centre-left) affecting the frontal lobe. Glioblastoma (glioblastoma multiforme) is a malignant (cancerous) tumour that arises from astrocytes, one of the support cells of the brain. It is an aggressive cancer with a poor prognosis. Here, it has led to right peritumoral oedema (fluid accumulation).
