Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). Computer model showing the secondary structure of VEGF, a protein that stimulates the formation of new blood vessels (angiogenesis). VEGF may also play a role in the metastasis (spread) of cancer, and is released in rheumatoid arthritis and diabetic retinopathy. VEGF is an important target for chemotherapy drugs.
