Period 2 elements. Animation of the periodic table, showing the elements of Period 2 and their electron configuration. The elements are lithium (Li), beryllium (Be), boron (B), carbon (C), nitrogen (N), oxygen (O), fluorine (F), and neon (Ne). The number of occupied electron shells of an element corresponds to its period number in the periodic table. Period 2 elements have their electrons in the 1st electron shell (1s orbital) and 2nd electron shell (2s and 2p orbitals). The 1st electron shell is full, and the 2nd electron shell fills up moving from left to right across the period, as shown in the diagrams. As the 2nd electron shell can only contain 8 electrons, there can only be eight elements in period 2, as shown here.
