Female and male sex cells. Animation of human female and male reproductive cells (also called sex cells or gametes). The female sex cell is the ovum, and the male sex cell is the spermatozoon (sperm cell). The animation starts with a view of the ovum, which has a diameter of 0.1 millimetres. The two outer layers are shown: the corona radiata ('jelly coat') and the zona pellucida ('membrane'). Also present is the nucleus (white, containing DNA) and the ovum's cytoplasm (grey). The animation then shows a single uniflagellar sperm cell in its motile state. It is much smaller, being 0.055 millimetres long. It consists of a tail, the midpiece ('middle piece'), the cell's membrane, and the head. Within the head is the nucleus (white, containing DNA) and the acrosome (outer layer). Both the ovum and sperm cell contain genetic material (deoxyribonucleic acid, DNA). Fertilisation occurs when the genetic material in the sperm's head fuses with the egg's DNA to form a zygote.
