Proteins from the measles virus, molecular model. A domain of the virus's P protein (upper, blue, green and yellow) is seen here in complex with part of the N protein (lower, red). These proteins are produced when the virus has invaded a host cell. They form a complex which helps the virus to reproduce its genetic material. The measles virus is highly contagious and transmitted through respiration. It causes fever, cough, runny nose, and a rash. In this model, solid colours represent the secondary structure of the protein (coils are alpha helices) and the faded tubular structure behind represents the individual atoms and bonds.
