Open-heart surgery. Close-up footage of surgeons carrying out open-heart surgery. The patient's chest has been opened up to allow the surgeons to operate on the heart, usually as part of a heart bypass operation. Chest drains have been inserted to allow blood and other fluids to drain from the cavity, and a rib spreader is used to keep the rib cage open. Suction tubes are used to remove blood during the operation.
