Enterovirus 71. Rotating animation of a molecular surface model of enterovirus 71 (EV71), a virus involved in epidemics of severe neurological diseases in children. It can cause polio-like syndrome and permanent paralysis. Infection may result in diarrhoea, rashes, and hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD). However it also has the potential to cause long term neurological and psychiatric disorders in children, and in some cases death. EV71 has undergone rapid evolutionary changes, contributing to its survival, ease of transmission, and evasion of a host's immune system.
