Heart MUGA scan of a beating heart. MUGA (multi-gated acquisition scan) is a technique that allows a detailed analysis of the function of the ventricles of the heart, usually the left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF). The technique uses the radioactive isotope technetium-99m, which is injected into the bloodstream. The patient is then viewed by a gamma camera, which detects the gamma radiation given off by the tracer. This allows the blood flow through the heart to be seen at every stage of the cardiac cycle, which allows diagnosis of various types of heart and coronary artery disease. The ejection fraction test measures how much blood the left ventricle pumps out with each heartbeat.
