Viewing the 2016 transit of Mercury. Astronomers and members of the public viewing the transit of Mercury that occurred on 9 May 2016. Mercury is the closest planet to the Sun, and transits of Mercury (where Mercury passes across the solar disc) are visible from Earth only about thirteen times a century. The previous transit took place in 2006 and the next will occur in 2019. The 2016 transit occurred between 11:12 and 18:42 UTC on 9 May 2016. This viewing event was organised by the astronomy society Volksterrenwacht Amsterdam. These telescopes are on the roof of the Felix Meritis building on the Keizersgracht, Amsterdam, the Netherlands.
