Caption

Free-electron laser equipment. Equipment in the facility containing the free-electron laser (FEL), at the G.I. Budker Institute of Nuclear Physics in Novosibirsk, Russia. A free-electron laser generates tunable, coherent, high power radiation, in a range of wavelengths. Its optical amplification is achieved in an undulator, fed with high energy electrons from an electron accelerator. FELs are used in fields such as atomic and molecular physics, ultrafast X-ray science, material studies, ultrafast chemical dynamics, biology, medicine and surgery.
