Venera 9 panorama of the surface of Venus, showing sediment and angular rocks. The Soviet Venera 9 spacecraft was launched on 8 June 1975 and entered orbit around Venus. Its lander was released on 20 October, entering the atmosphere of Venus on 22 October and touching down successfully. It returned a single panoramic image of the surface and made various atmospheric measurements before being destroyed by the hostile conditions on the planet. The original data has been reprocessed using modern methods to produce this image.
