Megacolon resection in ischaemic colitis. Surgeons resecting (removing) a patient's colon (large intestine, centre) that has become enlarged and dilated (megacolon) due to ischaemic colitis. Ischaemic colitis is the inflammation and injury of the large intestine as a result of inadequate blood supply. Here, a surgeon is using a stapler to seal the end of the rectum after it has been separated from the colon.
