Quantum magnetism observations. Model of quantum magnetism as observed at Argonne National Laboratory, Illinois, USA. Thsi model shows a honeycomb lattice with three pairs of diffuse magnetic X-ray scattering intensities arising from three short-range zigzag states (illustrated at centre). This lattice consists of Na2IrO3 (a sodium iridium oxide). The distinct magnetic anisotropy of each state manifests as bond-directional interactions that lead to a strong magnetic frustration. Image published in 2015.
