View west down Via dell'Abbondanza in the ruins of the ancient Roman city of Pompeii, Italy. Note the three stepping stones and the cart ruts in the stone road surface. When the Vesuvius volcano erupted in AD 79, Pompeii was buried in ash and other volcanic products known as a pyroclastic flow, which preserved much of what is visible today.
