Ammonite fossil in a rock core sample. Ammonites were marine invertebrate molluscs which became extinct at the end of the Cretaceous period 65 million years ago. Photographed at the V.I. Shpilman Research and Analytical Centre for the Rational Use of the Subsoil, which carries out geological, ecological and natural resources research for licensing oil and gas exploration in Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug, Russia.
