Computer model showing a bacterial protein (green and red) bound to mRNA (messenger ribonucleic acid, purple and brown). Some bacteria produce proteins designed to recognise specific sequences of mRNA. They then bind to the mRNA, preventing it from carrying out its job (repression). DNA template, and carries coding information to the sites of protein synthesis. By repressing the mRNA, bacteria can disrupt the production of proteins within cells.
