Ariane 5 rocket. Ariane 5 rocket, an expendable (single use) launch system. It was designed to place space probes and artificial satellites weighing up to 9.6 tonnes into geostationary transfer orbit (GTO) and up to 21 tonnes into Low Earth Orbit (LEO). Ariane 5 is 51 metres high and the primary launch craft for the European Space Agency (ESA). It has been in service since 1997.
