Pneumonia infection. Light micrograph of a section through lung tissue from a patient with bronchial pneumonia. Shown here is the blockage and breakdown of the air sacs and alveoli of the lung due to the accumulation of mucus infected with the pneumococcus bacterium (Streptococcus pneumoniae). Severe cases, where oxygen cannot get into the capillaries of the alveoli, can result in death. Magnification: x36 when printed at 10 centimetres high.
