Deep vein thrombosis ultrasound testing. Medical worker performing a lower extremity duplex ultrasound in a hospital intensive care unit (ICU), looking for deep vein thrombosis (DVT). DVT is the formation of a blood clot (thrombosis) within deep lying veins. It can be fatal if not treated. Ultrasound (high-frequency sound waves) from a transducer are reflected by body tissues. These echoes are detected and used to build an image of structures inside the body.
