Colostomy pouch handling. Close-up of a colostomy pouch (appliance) being put back in place by a medical worker. A colostomy is an operation in which part of the colon (large intestine) is brought through an incision in the abdominal wall and formed into an artificial anus called a stoma. This is then connected to a colostomy bag that collects faeces. A colostomy can be temporary or permanent, and is carried out when part of the colon or rectum has to be removed, often due to surgery to remove part of the bowel. This surgery may be due to cancer or other bowel disorders.
