Blood sugar level testing in diabetes. Diabetic 8-year-old girl testing a blood sample from one of her fingers. Diabetes is a condition where the body is resistant to or fails to produce the insulin needed to break down sugars in the blood. A diagnostic device is used to test the blood for the levels of the simple sugar glucose. Here, the reading is 15.2 millimoles per litre, which is too high. If blood sugar levels are high, an injection of insulin may be needed. In this case, the insulin is being delivered with an insulin pump.
