Insulin pump use in diabetes. Diabetic 8-year-old girl using an insulin pump to control her diabetes. Diabetes is a condition where the body is resistant to or fails to produce the insulin needed to break down sugars in the blood. A diagnostic device is used to test the blood for the levels of the simple sugar glucose. Here, the reading is 15.2 millimoles per litre, which is too high. This level is entered into the pump, which will dispense the insulin needed to lower the blood sugar to normal levels.
