Epidural haematoma. Illustration of an accumulation of blood from internal bleeding (a haematoma, red), caused by blunt force trauma to the head (skull fracture at upper left). In this case, the bleeding is into the space between the dura mater (outer brain membrane) and the skull. Surgery may be required to relieve the potentially fatal pressure on the brain caused by the internal bleeding.
