Hernia repair surgery. Close-up of surgeons repairing a right inguinal hernia. They are operating in the patient's groin area to carry out open hernia repair. They are placing a Prolene plug as part of a 'plug and patch' technique. Prolene is a synthetic, monofilament, non-absorbable polypropylene material. A hernia occurs when an organ, such as a loop of the intestine, protrudes from a weak area in the abdominal wall. Surgery aims to return the intestine to its normal position and repair the weakness in the abdominal wall.
