Human skull, artwork. The skull consists of the cranium (upper area) which encases and protects the brain, and the facial bones. The facial bones form the eye sockets, the nasal socket, and the jaw bones. The upper jaw bone (maxilla) also acts as the cheek bones. The lower jaw (mandible) is hinged at the rear to allow chewing and speech. Both jaw bones contain teeth. Across bottom are the clavicles (collar bones). The neck vertebrae (spinal bones) are seen below the skull.
