Caption

Painted ghost crab (Ocypode gaudichaudii) on a sandy beach. This crab inhabits sandy beaches on the Pacific coast of Central and South America. It takes its name from its largely nocturnal behaviour, although it is active by day as well. It feeds on detritus found in the sand, often making a ball of the sand while sifting through it for edible matter, and leaving the ball behind after feeding. Numerous such balls are seen in the background. This behaviour can be seen in more detail in clips K005/5439, 5443 and 5468. Filmed on Piqueros beach, Ecuador.
