Each fat cell or adipocyte, consists of a large central lipid droplet (yellow) surrounded by a thin layer of cytoplasm (red) containing the nucleus (blue). Fat cells store energy as an insulating layer of fat under the skin. Magnification: x4000 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
