Thor Heyerdahl (1914-2002), Norwegian ethnographer and explorer. Heyerdahl used local materials to build rafts to test his theories that ancient peoples were able to cross the world's oceans. His first and most famous expedition was in 1947, when he and his crew sailed the 'Kon-Tiki' balsa wood raft 7000 kilometres across the Pacific from South America to the Tuamotu Islands. Photographed on 4 May 1951.
