Clinton Hart Merriam (1855-1942), US naturalist and ethnographer. Merriam took part in the 1872 Hayden Geological Survey aged 16. He then attended Yale University (from 1874), studying natural history and anatomy. He then studied medicine at Columbia University, New York, qualifying as a physician in 1879. He continued to study birds and mammals while practising medicine, later moving into ethnography. He helped to found the American Ornithologists' Union in 1883, and from 1886 led the newly formed Division of Economic Ornithology and Mammalogy of the United States Department of Agriculture. He also helped found the National Geographic Society in 1888. This photograph dates from the period 1905 to 1945.
