Endoscopy medical laboratory. Medical researcher peering down an endoscope in a hospital laboratory. Endoscopes are tubes used to look inside the human body. The first endoscopes, developed in the 19th century, were improved with advances in lightning and camera technology, with major advances in image quality occurring with the incorporation of fibre optics in the 1950s.
