Rivularia cyanobacteria. Polarised light micrograph of a colony of Rivularia sp. cyanobacteria. Small, spherical heterocysts are present. These are specialized nitrogen-fixing cells. Cyanobacteria are bacteria that obtain their energy through photosynthesis. Rivularia is found growing on damp soils and submerged rocks near rivers. Magnification: x400 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
