Period 1 elements. Animation of the periodic table, showing the elements of Period 1 and their electron configuration. The elements are hydrogen (H) and helium (He). The number of occupied electron shells of an element corresponds to its period number in the periodic table. Period 1 elements have their electrons in the first electron shell (1s orbital). This shell fills up moving from left to right across the period, as shown in the diagrams. As this electron shell can only contain 2 electrons, there can only be two elements in period 1, as shown here.
