Shingles and herpes. Historical medical illustration showing Fig.1: herpes zoster (shingles) lesions on the face, Fig.2: herpes febrilis (herpes simplex) lesions on the face, Fig.3: herpes lesions on the penis, Fig.4: herpes lesions on the female genitals. Genital and oral herpes are caused by the herpes simplex virus, and shingles is caused by the varicella-zoster virus.
