Peel tower. Cutaway illustration of a peel tower (also known as a pele tower), a type of tower house and fortification that was built in the border regions between England and Scotland, with most dating from around the 15th century. They were used in areas that didn't have a castle, and also served as a warning system with beacons lit to warn of the approach of marauders or invaders.
