Computer illustration of a sperm cell, or spermatozoa. This is the male sex cell. It is produced in the testes and is responsible for fertilisation of the female ovum (egg). The genetic material of each sperm is carried in the rounded head, while its long tail is used for propulsion. Some 300 million sperm are released by the male during ejaculation, as opposed to the one ovum the female releases each month at ovulation.
