PAVE PAWS nuclear early-warning system. Radar detection facility for the nuclear missile early-warning system at Cape Cod Air Station, Massachusetts, USA. Called the Precision Acquisition Vehicle Entry Phased Array Warning System (PAVE PAWS), several such radar facilities were established in the 1980s and 1990s to detect sea-based nuclear launches by the USSR. Here, construction is nearing completion. The cleaning system is seen at upper left. Photographed in the 1980s.
