Caption

Nodular glomerulosclerosis in diabetes. Light micrograph of a section through a kidney from a diabetic patient affected by glomerulosclerosis - a hardening of the glomerulus (large, round, right) in the kidney. Here, a fibrosis (turquoise) can be seen in the glomerulus (large, round). The glomeruli are networks of capillaries in the kidney that are the first stage in the blood filtering process. The hardening and scarring associated with glomerulosclerosis disrupts this process. This allows protein to leak from the blood into urine causing proteinuria (large amounts of protein in urine), one of the main signs of the condition. Diabetes is a frequent cause of glomerulosclerosis. Magnification: x560, when printed 10 centimetres wide.
