Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Synura sp., golden colonial alga (chrysophyte). Inorganic scales cover individual cell surfaces. Synura sp., golden colonial alga synurid (chrysophyte). Inorganic silica scales and some spines cover the individual colony cells. Each cell of the colony contains two subequal heterodynamic flagella. The synurids are a small group of planktonic heterokont algae, found mostly in freshwater; widespread in distribution in temporary pools, bogs, ponds, and lakes. Magnification: x365 when shortest axis printed at 25 millimetres.
