Light micrograph (LM) of Caffeine and adrenaline crystals (epinephrine, adrenalin) crystals. Caffeine is an alkaloid found naturally in such foods as coffee beans, tea, kola nuts and cacao beans. Caffeine has a characteristic bitter taste. Its main pharmacological properties are: a stimulant action on the central nervous system with psychotropic effects and stimulation of respiration, a stimulation of the heart rate, and a diuretic effect. Caffeine is a drug and consumption leads to pharmacologic tolerance with defined withdrawal symptoms. Adrenaline is a hormone produced in the adrenal medulla that prepares the body for emotional stress by increasing blood sugar levels, metabolic and heart rates.
