Hedgehog mite (Caparinia sp.), coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). View of the mite's specialised mouthparts with blunt chewing chelicerae (fang-like protrusions, centre). These are used to feed on the dead upper layer of the hedgehog's skin. In severe cases it causes mange (hair loss, itching and inflammation), which can lead to fatal widespread infection. Magnification: x150 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
