Organic humus (soil compost); decaying plant materials, some mineral particles, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). Humus it a part of soil organic matter that forms in the soil when plant and animal matter decays. It contains many important nutrients that are needed for other plant growth. Humus influences the overal density of soil and plays and important part in moisture and nutrient retention. Nitrogen is one of the most important components of humus.
