Apple fruit parenchyma cells (Malus domestica), coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). Shown here are parenchyma cells deep within the apple fruit cortex. These cells are large storage cells (also called ground tissue cells) that contain the apple fruit constituents. Compared to many other fruits and vegetables, apples contain relatively low amounts of Vitamin C as well as a several other antioxidant compounds. Apples may also help with heart disease, weight loss and controlling cholesterol, they do not have any cholesterol, they have fibre, which reduces cholesterol by preventing reabsorption, and are bulky for their caloric content like most fruits and vegetables.
