Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) Frog eye retinal rod and cone cells seen in cross section (Eleutherodactylus coqui). Shown here is a cross section of the receptor cells (rods and cones) in the retina (the light-sensitive tissue that lines the inside of the eye). Rod cells perceive light of different intensities, whereas cone cells allow colour vision. Light triggers chemical signals in the photoreceptor cells, which are transmitted along neurons in the optic nerve (not seen) to the brain. The cell bodies (red) of the receptor cells are located in a layer above the rods and cones. Magnification: x1,065 when shortest axis printed at 25 millimetres.
