Caption

NASA officials during Presidential tour. Footage of NASA officials during the Presidential tour of NASA's newly established Manned Spacecraft Center in Houston, Texas, USA, on 12 September 1962. The footage also includes astronauts who were there to brief President Kennedy, and the camera tracks to follow NASA astronaut John H. Glenn. In 1961, US President John F. Kennedy had pledged that the USA would achieve a Moon landing before the end of the decade. This led to a massive expansion of NASA and the Apollo moon programme, including the establishment of this centre in Houston (later named the Johnson Space Center). Kennedy visited several of the newly established space centres in September 1962, visiting the Houston NASA facilities in the late morning of 12 September following his famous speech ('We choose to go to the Moon') at Rice University's Rice Stadium.
