Aircraft releases fire retardant over forest fire. Aircraft releasing fire retardant (red) over a forest fire. Fire retardants are normally composed of ammonium sulphate or ammonium polyphosphate with various additives such as thickeners, wetting agents and preservatives. They are often coloured red to indicate areas where the retardant has fallen. The aircraft is an Aeroflite Tanker 160. Photographed on 9 October 2014, at the North Fork of the American River, near Colfax, California, USA.
