Switchgrass (Panicum virgatum) plants. Switchgrass is being investigated as a source of ethanol for use as a biofuel. Ethanol is produced from plant residues by fermentation, and is used in motor vehicles as an alternative to fuel obtained from oil deposits. This work involves developing new cultivars of the plant that will improve the yield of biomass. Improving the yield will reduce the need for deforestation or to use land needed for food crops. Photographed in the USA.
