Total lunar eclipse, montage image. The sequence of four images runs from upper left to lower right, showing the Moon passing into the shadow of the Earth. This cuts off the sunlight that normally illuminates the Moon's surface. During a lunar eclipse, the Moon appears this orange colour (lower right) due to being illuminated by sunlight passing through the Earth's atmosphere. Blue light has a shorter wavelength than red light and is scattered by the Earth's atmosphere, but red light has a longer wavelength and passes through to reach the Moon.
